Beatrice Laus and María Zardoya have been posing together on social media for quite some time. But when Bea told DAZED that the final scene of the movie Bugonia by Yorgos Lanthimos inspired the music video for the song she recorded with Zardoya, fans took this as the collab being confirmed.
And just like that, “All I Did Was Dream Of You” is here. This marks a two-year music drought from Beabadoobee after her third studio album “This Is How Tomorrow Moves” (2024) charted at number one on the UK Albums Charts in the week of its release – marking her first chart number one.
Signed under Dirty Hit, Bea has been teasing new music since last year, when we can assume her new album was in the beginning stages of production and writing. While an official announcement confirming the album is yet to follow, it is safe to say the excitement for it is building up.
Describing the single on her Instagram, Bea said: “I have missed this, I’ve missed you and this year is going to be unreal!!”
The track starts off on a soft and mellow note as Bea’s vocals describe a person occupying her mind and all of her thoughts. She dreams of lying low, “wanting to waste time again”, and to be at ease in life in the presence of her lover.
Around the pre-chorus, the guitars in the background pick up before they reach climax in the chorus as Bea pleads, “Stay, stay or just leave me / Stay or just leave me be”. Here, she is joined by María Zardoya, who adds another layer of softness in the vocals.
Zardoya starts off the second verse with lyrics reminiscent of an all-or-nothing approach to a relationship. She sings, “Nightmares always feel like this / They swallow me”, as the two singers’ vocals contrast one another incredibly well, both careful and smooth-sounding while maintaining the emotional aspect and the near-eerie, gloomy vibes.
Along with a beautifully crafted music video filmed in Lithuania, which depicts, among beautiful visuals, a car crash and a slow-motion snowfall, this is no doubt the collaboration we needed – a dark and melancholic tone accompanied by a strong chorus and vulnerable lyrics.
“All I Did Was Dream Of You” is a combination of everything that both Beabadoobee and The Marías do so well in their individual releases, and seeing them come together on this track has been nothing but a pleasure to see.
I am so excited to see what’s in store for both artists this year – this track is just the beginning!
