With swanky 60s boy band vibes and an upbeat mix of indie rock and pop-rock sounds, Topline Addicts are the band we didn’t know we needed in this era.
There’s something really fun about taking an aesthetic and sound and giving it a fresh take. Now, nostalgia is one thing, but what about when it’s a new twist on an older generation's nostalgia?
Well, depending on how it’s done, it can be the best marketing and branding move; if done badly, it’s cringeworthy to everyone at best. Topline Addicts, though, has mastered their brand as a new-age 60s boy band, and it’s really working for them! With three-piece burgundy suits and a touch of vintage music feel, they are only refining the methods to their madness.
Topline Addicts is a Dallas-based band with strong visual and musical influences rooted in the era of 60s boy bands. They have coined their sound as “if the Beach Boys and Foo Fighters had a love child” – and who doesn’t hear that and look it up to hear what they sound like? I know that I did.
Their social media content is fun and playful, yet often chaotic in circumstance, keeping you engaged. All of their songs are ones you can dance to, either slowly or while jumping around. From screen printing their own merch and filling their own merch orders to having their own podcast, Topline allows you to meet the members individually to get a feel for who each member is, playing into the boy band type of marketing where everyone has a favorite boy from the band. While normal boy bands would all be singers and dancers, Topline instead is a band taking on the same formation!
On Friday, the 24 of July, they dropped their newest single, “Not That Good”, followed by a release show, and another performance the very next evening at a venue in Dallas called Sundown at Granada.
This show was honestly really fun, and it came with a lot of fun surprises! The band is currently the four of them, but we had two guest bassists, one who played most songs with the band and one who was a fan all the way from San Antonio named Saul, who came up to Dallas for the show and got invited to play the song “Dance With Me”.
If that wasn’t enough guests for you, then you’ll be happy to learn that they had two powerhouse backing female vocalists to help bring the songs to life and play an energetic and well-done cover of “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” by RAYE. More covers, you say? We all love “Stacy’s Mom,” originally by Fountains Of Wayne, so of course that cover choice had the crowd hopping!
The whole band, but especially the frontman, Carter Brooks, is so good with crowd work and crowd control, so it was great to finally get to see this band work in a live performance setting.
I have been working with them over the last year as they have been focused on writing and working on internal band work, so getting the live element for myself was something that was not only really special, but also just shows me once again that they have so much potential.
While guest artists and covers are great, we had at least one more fun moment when Brooks picked a fan to come up on stage and play cowbell also during their song “Dance With Me” – because everything could use more cowbell, if you know what I mean! The fan, Jaylyn, did an amazing job and picked the black shirt we had out at the merch table for him!
Speaking of merch, I was running the table that night as well. They did really well in sales that night, selling multiple of the black logo design, a few in red, and out of the only two sizes they had left for the crewnecks. There were also a good few totes that went home with crowd members as well. I also bought the black version of the T-shirt design myself, because I believe in paying for merch and tickets from the artists you work with.
While this was the band’s first live show in a while, they absolutely took the room captive for an hour and a half and gave us all an amazing show. It was like they had played every weekend before that night.
The whole time, people told us how they had driven from other parts of Texas hours away and also from Louisiana to come out and see this show and begged for more in the near future.
The band did amazing. They sounded great, did fantastic with the crowd, and had so many fun elements to the show that it kept you guessing, and even the crowd themselves were all gems as well as the Sundown at Granada staff. I can’t wait to go out to more Topline Addicts shows in the future!
