The first release since the Deluxe version of her “Memoir of a Sparklemuffin” album last summer, the singer-songwriter and actress Suki Waterhouse is back with the upbeat and optimistic single, “Back in Love”.
The track begins on an electronic note, easing into a bass-led production which lingers throughout the song. This is accompanied by guitars and steady drum beats in the pre-chorus. Later on, especially from the second verse onwards, maracas or similar rattles can be heard, which in my opinion add a balancing beat to the song, as if seeking to make the listener want to groove along to the melody alone.
As the vocals tone down in the bridge of the track, subtle trumpet sounds can be heard, bringing the melodic production to a climax before toning down as the song finishes.
Nearly two weeks after the release, the most memorable part of the track for me continues to be the chorus, with lyrics such as “Turning the dark to light / Happiness hits me when / I’m back in love again” standing out the most to me.
Waterhouse sings about the comfort of being in love, finding simple pleasures with your partner – such as in the line “Back to jazz on the radio” – and settling down in ease with someone you are consistently so secure with.
Suki’s previous hits, such as “Moves” and “Good Looking”, all have a similar upbeat and harmonic vibe to them, repeating the key chorus lines just enough times to resonate, but without sounding too monotonous.
The release was accompanied by an inventively crafted music video, directed by screenwriter Kaz Firpo, which sees Suki performing on stage before taking several arrows to her chest – also depicted by the original album cover shot by Miles Aldridge.
Taking to her Instagram, Suki said upon the single’s release: “I hope listening brings you love & luck & lust, and so excited for what’s to come.”
As a long-term fan of her music, including this single, I cannot wait to see what this year brings for Suki and what she has in store for us!
