If you keep up with the pop girl sphere, Alessi Rose might be a name you’ve heard of. The 23-year-old English singer-songwriter has been steadily rising in popularity since her debut in 2023.

She’s released three EPs, with “Voyeur” being her most recent, released last year.  In the same year, she opened for Tate McRae and Dua Lipa, in addition to her own tour around Europe and the UK.

“Skin”, released on 19 May, is the first single of her expected debut album. Alessi first mentioned the song on a TikTok live in February of this year, but fans got to hear an actual snippet of the song on another live the next month. It became clear in April that this would be her next single when she began posting videos featuring snippets of the song, getting fans excited about the potential release. A few lucky fans even got the chance to listen to the song, including some other new ones, before its release through studio hangouts. Half a year on the dot after her last release, “Skin” was officially announced on 7 May.

When I first read what Alessi said about the song under her announcement, I knew that it would hit hard emotionally. She described the song as being a look into the experience of living with OCD, a common theme found in Miss Rose’s music. Trying to fit the mould of what others expect from you, feeling less like yourself the more that you do. Listening to the song, that really comes through.

Immediately, when you begin listening, you get the sense of the emotional weight of the song. With a staggered entry, each component of the instrumental comes in following the same rhythmic beat. The song has a subtle call-and-response effect when the lyrics “Do I know who I am if when it stops I’m lost?” are sung; the instrumental stops before the chorus, where the sound leans more toward airy, dreamy pop.

You start to understand why the song is called “Skin” with the use of the metaphor “Wearing somebody else’s skin” to signify not feeling like yourself anymore. At the end of the chorus, we get the song’s lyrical motif of not recognising the person you’ve become.

When the chorus comes back, the instrumental is amplified, and the beats are being hit harder. The way Alessi sings it has changed as well, feeling the intensity of the emotions she’s expressing. It serves as the turning point before we reach the bridge.

Fans of pop music often enjoy a good bridge, and if that’s you, then Alessi Rose does not fall short. She highlights them throughout her discography – songs like “Same Mouth” and “RIP” are two standouts. In “Skin”, the bridge acts as a realisation of wanting to return to being true to yourself, and not enjoying how much you’ve changed to fit the expectations of others.

The song has truly gotten under my skin in the best way possible. Miss Rose’s confessional writing can be seen as a representation of someone’s innermost thoughts. It makes the listener feel understood.

Rose has written on her Substack that, even though her songs are “an amalgamation” of her feelings, she enjoys watching her fans take on their own interpretations of the lyrics. The theme of “Skin” can be relatable to many, as people can apply it to their own situations. Music often hits harder when you can see yourself in it.

If you like “Skin”, she’s already confirmed she’ll be performing the song on her upcoming festival tour this summer, so be on the lookout if Alessi is coming to a city near you! We’re already excited to see what else she has up her sleeve.
