Harry Styles is not a new name in the music industry. Debuting in 2011 with the boyband One Direction and later emerging as a solo artist in 2017 with “Sign of the Times” and later his self-titled debut album, he has decades of recognised success under his belt.
At BRUIT., we are ready to dance along with Harry, and we are here for the musical experimentation he has already shown with the hit single “Aperture”.
To celebrate, here are some of our team members’ favourite tracks from the album and why we love them.
Magda’s favourites:
1: “American Girls”
Perhaps the reason this track is my favourite is that it comes first on the album, right after "Aperture", which we’ve already heard as a single.
From the first listen, the track feels fresh, new, and in all honesty, it is just so nice to hear Harry’s voice again after almost four full years since his last album.
Styles sings in the chorus, “I’ve known you for ages / It’s all that I’ve heard / My friends are in love with American Girls / I’ve seen it in stages, all over the world / My friends are in love with American Girls”, and while these lyrics may sound self-explanatory, what I love the most about this track is the blending of a slow, piano-oriented intro blending into a faster chorus and the drop back down to a careful instrumental in the verses. “American Girls” was an instant favourite of mine from KISSCO from the first listen. None of it feels repetitive, and Harry’s voice is very gentle in the execution of the verses, plus, on an additional note, the bass in this song deserves a particular note.
2: “Paint By Numbers”
I had to pause and replay the track once I paid close attention to the chorus lyrics, “It’s a lifetime of learning to Paint By Numbers / And watchin’ the colours run”. The track is, in my opinion, one of the most vulnerable on KISSCO, describing what I interpret to be time passing by as life unfolds, and feeling stuck in one place while it does.
The mere title of this track describes finding distractions and means of coping with a stressful moment, and as the second song of the album, it wraps the album up on such an honest and emotional note.
Starting with “Oh, what a gift it is to be noticed”, Harry Styles acknowledges his position and possibly notes on his own fame, “Paint By Numbers” is about figuring yourself out and accepting that you may not always know what you’re doing with your life all of the time, and that’s okay!
3: “Season 2 Weight Loss”
When I first read the title of this track, I found myself wondering what its melodical and lyrical contents may contain. Given that this track is in my top three, you can only assume I was positively surprised.
The electronic opening of the track is instantly accompanied by a drum and synth combination as the lyrics plead for the listener to accept Harry the way he is – “Holding / Holding out / Hoping you will love me now”.
In my eyes, this track is one of the more musically experimental ones of the album, which you can tell by the mixing and production, but regardless, it exceeded my expectations by miles. I was worried about it being a sad ballad, and while the lyrical contents match this to an extent, I love the way it is wrapped under a calm and honestly fun tune. Extra points for the bridge from the 2:20-minute mark onwards, where the vocals almost echo throughout.
HONOURABLE MENTION: “Pop”
I wasn’t originally going to write about this song, but the more I replayed the album, the more “Pop” stood out to me. Once again, the bass stands out especially in the beginning, but personally, the chorus is arguably the most fun part of any song on KISSCO.
The chorus, “Am I in over my head ? / This could go anywhere / I do it and do it again / It’s meant to be pop”, contains worthy electronic notes, but more than anything, it’s just so fun to listen to!
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve replayed this song since the album came out. If you give any song from this album a listen, please let it be “Pop”!
Jaleesa’s favourites:
1: “Coming Up Roses”
When this song debuted during a DJ set from Fred Again a week before the KISSCO release, I already knew this was going to be one of my favourites, which it ended up being!
From the first note, I felt like we were back in 2017 when Harry released his self-titled debut album. The flow of the chorus scratches my brain so perfectly; his voice when he sings these types of songs is always gorgeous. The way he goes from low to high as the song builds gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Once the violins started, it felt so surreal – I haven’t felt that way since hearing Harry’s song, “Fine Line”, live.
The lullaby feeling you get towards the end of the song fits one of the lyrics perfectly: “But we see out the night with your head on my chest, me and you.”
This is the first song in his entire discography that only Harry himself has writing credits on, and dare I say you can hear that in the lyrics and the beautiful execution. I have zero notes for this song; it is an instant 10/10 for me, and I cannot wait to hear it live!
2: “Paint By Numbers”
Harry’s voice and a guitar are all I need to be happy. The first line of the song being “Oh, what a gift it is to be noticed”, nearly brought me to tears, and I remember sitting on my bed at midnight, wrapped in a blanket, with my headphones on and just closing my eyes and listening to this song. Tears slipped out of my closed eyes throughout the song, and I remember my whole face being wet by the time it finished.
The moments this song is about feel like a coming-of-age moment for him to me: Harry does not want to be a stepfather yet, and wishes to step out of that life to find himself, taking his time in doing so. I think it is safe to say that after this record, he has found himself, and I couldn’t be happier for him.
For only two minutes and twenty-six seconds, “Paint By Numbers” is an absolute masterpiece, and definitely another one of my favourites.
3: “Ready, Steady, Go!”
The instrumental at the start of this song is very reminiscent of the producer Kid Harpoon’s style, reminiscent of his past work with other artists. It’s so different from what Harry has made before, but at the same time, it feels so familiar. The lyrics are just as enthusiastic as he wrote on his previous album, “Harry’s House”.
If you aren’t bopping your head during this song, what are you doing? This track is definitely going to go platinum in my household.
HONOURABLE MENTION: “American Girls”
This is for all the One Direction girls. I listened to this song for the first time with my mum, and I remember gasping and saying, “This is long-haired Harry!”
This song sounds like it belongs on One Direction’s fourth album, “Four”. I wish Harry had released this as the lead single instead of “Aperture”, but it’s a great second track either way!
The chorus is so catchy, you can sing along to it on your first listen. And as if it didn’t remind me of One Direction before this, it would have after watching the music video. It is like the grown-up version of the boy band’s 2013 music video for “Kiss You”.
I cannot wait to hear this song on the radio, in stores, and of course, live on the Together, Together Tour.
Zoë's favourites:
1: "Are you listening yet?"
This song immediately became my favourite on Harry's fourth album after listening to it front to back for the first time. I expected it to be one of the slower songs because of the title: I did not think the song was going to be so energetic! I imagine the tune to be great to dance along to, and I believe it will be one of the best songs to experience live.
2: "Coming Up Roses"
The violin was the first thing I noticed in "Coming Up Roses". The song has a beautiful yet melancholic melody, and the vulnerable lyrics pair with it accordingly. While this is one of the slower songs, that doesn't stop it from being perfectly placed onto a tracklist full of more energetic songs, forming a great contrast.
3: "Ready, Steady, Go!"
The lyrics of "Ready, Steady, Go!" are very catchy and will be stuck in your head for ages after listening to the song. It starts out with the perfect rhythm, with the first verse being a perfect start and also my favourite part. The bass only ties this together.
