After the powerful, rock ‘n roll-influenced tunes of “Miles to Go,” Lily Forte takes another direction to bridge the gap between decades of musical influences.
“Out of the Blue” is inspired by an abrupt breakup over the phone and holds Lily’s most direct and cutthroat songwriting yet.
The songwriting captures her shock and bewilderment over the situation, in lyrics such as “Baby what the fuck was that? / Did you find Jesus on the road? / Was it in something that you smoked?”
It further describes themes of utter confusion and betrayal, which become most evident in the chorus: “Oh I hope your new life holds you / Like I used to do / Hope you’re sipping something strong / When you find out the problem's you.”
Its intentionally aggressive production utilises the influences of jazz and blends them with the weight of a modern pop breakup song, yet again showcasing her beautiful alto vocals.
Lily commented on the storytelling, saying: “I was intrigued by the thought of appealing to someone through song. Maybe if I write these words, he’ll finally hear me.”
The music video further drives this narrative with a play-by-play reenactment, following the lyrics closely.
As an up-and-coming artist, Lily continues to create a unique brand and utilise her diverse taste in music, making this song and her upcoming album a highlighted anticipation release for music lovers with diverse tastes themselves.
“Out of the Blue” is the second single from her upcoming debut album, which will be released in January next year.
