Some artists just have it together in such a way that it looks like coordinated chaos, and Carter Vail is just that guy. He’s a meme, his music is catchy, and he has a clear branding as the underdog-cowboy. The sound is cohesive and blends indie rock with a just-a-twinge-of-Western feel, which is pleasant and almost vintage. He crafts well-made tracks by day and by night, becoming something of a fever dream with meme songs like “Dirt Man”, “Fast As Fuck”, “I Was A Smart Kid”, and many others.

To learn what he did differently from other artists who market themselves as a meme or meme creator, we have to meet The Dirt Man. So let’s go down the rabbit hole, shall we?

While playing in bands during middle and high school, Vail found a love of music that has continued to this day. Later, he went into audio engineering, training at the

University of Miami.

In April of 2016, Carter Vail released his first song, “Catching Elizabethunofficially, but the first release he put out as the Carter Vail we know now wasn’t until 2018 with the drop of “Melatonin.”  His first two albums, “100 Cowboys” and “The Interstellar Tennis Championship Vol. II”, were released under the Assemble Sound record label.

His music career didn’t truly solidify until 2024 when he put out a meme song under the name of “Dirt Man”, which essentially is a lore song about a made-up character called, of course, the Dirt Man, of whom you must supply with dirt or he will kidnap you and whisk you away to his underground lair.

Now you may be sitting there wondering how on earth this makes Carter a marketing genius, and I am so glad that you asked, because we’re going to elaborate on that!

While we have plenty of artists who use memes or meme songs to market their music, merch, shows, and anything they can, it is a great way to catch attention. In this day and age, humor is everywhere, on every app, and in so many companies, creative markets, and branding identities. But it also means that, while it can work as a tactic, you have to somehow set yourself apart from the millions of others doing the same. Mister Vail saw his opportunity and ran wild.

Bo Burnham, Little Dicke, Lonely Island, and many other comedians use music as a format for their comedy routines, making music a vessel for their jokes. The song that brought Carter Vail to fame was not, in fact, one of his serious songs, but rather that silly jiggle-style song, playing in 30 seconds or less, telling the story about the Dirt Man that got him the push he needed to get him signed to RCA, a major record label that is under the Sony Music Entertainment umbrella. As his music grew, the virality of that and the duets with multiple other artists on TikTok became a trend alongside the song.

His branding and marketing have always been based on comedy, even with his more serious music career. With many releases and show announcements rooted in his ability to mark the awkward, weird, 80s himbo vibes in a lot of his humor, there’s a stark contrast with his serious music that has that indie, retro western feel. It's cool to almost see a divide that steers you to see which Carter you are getting, while still subtle in its own way.

With that divide, he can create two different types of content and show which part of his algorithm you are on at any given time. Why both are very much him, it just crafts the ability to be able to tell when he’s interacting as a comedian and when he is engaging more so as a musician.

In a world that feeds on comedy and music for sanity, Carter Vail has provided a reliable source of both. In the same way that Bo Burnham’s “Inside” became a comfort performance and soundtrack for many, as well as his content providing comedic coping, so does Carter Vail in a shorter form of content. It’s honestly a genius strategy. Along with marketing to the awkward crowd, we could always use an underdog to represent.

I fully believe that Carter Vail has set himself up to last for a long time and only grow from here as he gets more and more eyes and ears on him. I will definitely be continuing to follow his antics in comedy and music as he melds the two into his success. I am also going to keep my eyes out for a Texas show, as I would love to experience his live shows! I highly recommend hopping on the Carter Vail bandwagon if you haven’t already!
